Ingrown toenail: specialist, pain-free treatment
An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs when the edge of the nail digs into the skin of the toe, causing pain, inflammation and even infection. At Podolex we are specialists in nail treatments: we resolve it with local anaesthetic, minimally invasive techniques and clear guidance so that your toe recovers well.
Why do toenails become ingrown?
Ingrown toenails are one of the most common reasons for visiting a podiatrist. The most usual causes are:
- Cutting nails incorrectly or too curved.
- Narrow shoes or shoes that press on the toes.
- A very curved nail shape (pincer nail).
- Knocks, repeated minor trauma or sport.
- Hereditary predisposition.
If left untreated, it can become infected and form a granuloma. The sooner it is seen, the simpler the treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Is ingrown toenail treatment painful?
No. We apply local anaesthetic to the toe, so you feel no pain during treatment. Afterwards, any discomfort is usually mild and easy to manage.
Will I be able to walk afterwards?
Yes. You walk out of the clinic. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes that are open at the front that day.
Can it become ingrown again?
If the cause is the shape of the nail, it can happen again. In those cases we consider nail surgery, which removes the problem edge permanently.
Do you treat children and teenagers?
Yes. Ingrown toenails are very common in young people and athletes, and we adapt the treatment to each age.
When should I see a podiatrist?
As soon as you notice pain, redness or swelling at the edge of the nail. Do not try to cut it yourself: this can make the injury worse and cause infection.
